Community Club performs UK Premier of 'Cancelled' play
The Iver Heath Drama Club celebrates its 70th birthday by performing two plays at the Iver Heath Village Hall, one of which has never been performed by anyone in the UK before. The adults of the club are performing ‘Cancelled’, a one-act comedy in which a 1940s radio soap opera is suddently cancelled. This upsets their new sponsor, who happens to run the local mafia, so he demands the show must go on. The play is written by American playright M. Robert Grunwald. It was a finalist in a New York festival in 2008 and won an award at a playwriting competition in 2009.The other one-act play, both of which are being performed in the same show, is a spy spoof starring and produced by the Youth team of the club. “I’ve Been Expecting You, Mr Smirk” is written by Geoff Bamber and directed by local residents Alice Campling, 15, and Connor McGinn, 17. The lighting, make up and hair are all being run by the Youth team also. Iver Heath Drama Club’s Chairman, Matt Streuli, is also directing the adult’s ‘Cancelled’ play. He said “Our Summer show is a fantastic opportunity. Our audience see two brilliant ‘one-act’ shows in one night for one ticket. Meanwhile it gives our young talent the opportunity to grow, experiment and flourish who will then be ready to take my place when I’m too old for my Panto Dame high heels!” Both shows are being performed at the Iver Heath New Village Hall this July.
Earlier this year the club performed it’s annual pantomime which sold over 500 tickets during its 6 show run. The Iver Heath Drama Club was established in 1948 by John Hargreves, who at the time worked in a senior position for Pinewood Studios, in association with the local Women’s Institute. To this day, the club uses show’s profits, fundraising and grants from Ivers Parish Council, Buckinghamshire County Council and Pinewood Studios to offset their membership fees and keep ticket prices at a relative low. Mr Streuli, who is a Teaching Assistant at a local school, said “Our club is a big extended family. We have over 40 members, from 8 to 80, some of whom battle physical or mental disabilities. Everyone is included regardless of wealth or abilities. All we care about is putting on a great show, looking after each other and having fun.”
Tickets for the summer shows, which include both one act plays in the same night, start at £7 each and can be booked at www.TicketSource.co.uk/ihdc or by calling 01753 479 905.
