Romans believe that Janus is the god of beginnings & ends, presiding over every entrance & departure while at Banasthali it is one of the most popular events celebrated by the students of Life Sciences, Bio Technology, Chemistry, Pharmacy and Chemical Engineering.

It is indeed a matter of pride that the School of Life Sciences has been instrumental in the rapid academic and research growth of Banasthali. Under Life Sciences, apart from doctoral programmes, the degrees offered include BTech / MTech Biotechnology, BSc Botany / Zoology / Biotechnology, MSc Biotechnology, MSc Bioscience, MSc Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, MTech / MSc Bioinformatics.

Presently the Shri Radha Kissen Kanoria Centre for Advanced Studies in Bioscience and Biotechnology is housed in state of the art building Jeev Mandir. The department of Chemistry established in 1963 offers BSc / MSc Chemistry and PhD. Pharmacy department established in 2008 which features in 2018 among top 25 in India under the coveted National Institutional Ranking Framework NIRF of MHRD Govt of India offers BPharm, MPharm and PhD. The 2008 established chemical engineering department offers BTech, MTech as well as PhD.

While the three day festival Janus at Banasthali for 2018 is scheduled during October 9 – 11, whole lot of pre event activities has been going on for the past few days. The kick-off for Janus started with a Marathon run on 09 Oct 2018 at sunrise by hundreds of students across the 3.4 Square Kilometre Banasthali campus. The formal inauguration was at Gyan Mandir Auditorium with Chief Guest Dr H S Misra FNASc, Head Molecular Biology Division and Professor at Homi Bhabha National Institute Mumbai.

Amidst singing of Saraswati Vandana by a group of students, the auspicious lamp lighting was done by the Chief Guest with other dignitaries who included Deans Prof Jaya Dwivedi and Prof Dipjyoti Chakraborty and Prof BR Natarajan Chemical Engineering Head. Prof Jaya Dwivedi gave the welcome address while Prof Dipjyoti introduced the speaker to the audience. Ms Mahima Kalra MSc First year Chemistry student anchored the proceedings.

Dr HS Misra opened his key note address about opportunities in various institutions under Department of Atomic Energy DAE including the different departments at BARC and discussed in detail the biological response to DNA damaging agents and impact of radiation on Deinococcus. He shared research details of PQQ Pyrroloquinoline quinone and a quinoprotein kinase support gamma radiation resistance in Deinococcus radiodurans and effect of phosphorylation on DNA repair functions as well as functional significance of the Serine / Threonine phosphorylation, binary fission in bacteria and effect of phosphprylation on cell division proteins.

Prof Natarajan presented a glittering memento to Dr HS Misra on behalf of the Janus organizing committee. Prof HS Misra got a thunderous round of applause when he mentioned that students who come from Banasthali for doing internship performed extremely well and offered to take Chemical engineering students also for next session.

The other events of Janus 2018 include for first day Rangoli, Poster presentation, Science Quiz, Science Slogan making, grand dinner; for second day Treasure Hunt, Think Tank, Handscape, PowerPoint presentation, model display, Scientific Doodling, Group Discussions, Scientific Art and extempore; while for third day student talks, photography, medical camp, bio safety awareness and the ultimate cultural program.

Janus undoubtedly is Take Action, Share and Inspire.
