Checkatrade Members Awarded
”Two of the Checkatrade members were awarded at the Arun Business Partnership Awards”The end of the year invariably heralds in the Award Season for businesses up and down the country: 2009 was no exception. Sussex-based companies The Creative Woodworking Company and Justwood Flooring have both been recognised in recent local awards.
Simon Ward of The Creative Woodworking Company in Bognor Regis, was recognised for Outstanding Customer Care at the Arun Business Partnership Awards. Comments such as “superb service from start to finish”, “everything was 100% service” and “first class workmanship, wonderfully created bespoke furniture” from Simon’s customers helped to clinch the award for him from fierce competition. Simon believes that good customer service should be at the heart of any business, large or small and is convinced that this ethos has allowed his business to continue to thrive.
Another Bognor-based company, Justwood Flooring, owned by Alistair Smyth, won the Small Business of the Year (6 – 10 employees) at the same awards. It is the fourth year in a row that Alistair and his staff have picked up awards; in previous years at the Arun Business Awards, they have been successful in the marketing and promotion category and it is the second year that they have won Small Business of the Year, having won it in 2006. They are also past winners at the Observer Business Awards.
Each one of these companies is so confident of their service, they actively encourage the people they work for to send feedback to Checkatrade.com for publication on the Checkatrade website. The Creative Woodworking Company joined Checkatrade in 2008 and have over 28 excellent reports from the public on their service. Justwood Flooring are one of the original members of Checkatrade, joining in 1998. They have amassed over 700 reports in that time. Both show that hard work, consistently high standards of workmanship and superb customer care pays off, even in an economic downturn.
Checkatrade helps combat the UK's rogue trader problem by continuously vetting and monitoring local traders such as builders, plumbers and electricians. The idea was born in 1998 after a tornado hit the small West Sussex town of Selsey. Traders poured in from as far away as Liverpool and Manchester. Unfortunately, some ripped off the inhabitants of the town. Local businessman, Kevin Byrne, realised there was nowhere to check out the traders’ credentials and the company that became Checkatrade was formed.
Since then, Checkatrade has grown to include over 3400 genuine trade members, growing by an average 100 new members every month, and, via the Royal Mail, distributes 4.8 million directories into communities throughout Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, Dorset and Berkshire, while the website includes traders from across the UK.
