DENIC now allows “ß” for .DE domains
InterNetX Logo
DENIC is following the revised standards for IDNs with the release of the special character “ß” for .DE domain names. The step was triggered by the lack of backwards compatibility of the old standards. As there was no conclusive addressing for domains with the characters “ss” and “ß”, the introduction of “ß” seeks to avoid any loss of trust amongst users of the Domain Name System (DNS), on which the InterNetX domain management system AutoDNS 3.0 is also based. Up to date, the implemented IDN protocol did not accept “ß” as a valid character, but instead transformed it to “ss” (ASCII character set). According to the new standard, domains with “ss” and “ß” will no longer be treated as the same, but as two separate domains.
