Tourism in Dubai increased – Revenues reach 13.2 billion

The Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing reported yesterday that Dubai hosted over 8.6 million guests last year which is an increase of about 10.3 per cent. 2009 7.8 million people visited Dubai.
Tourism revenues reached Dh13.2 billion last year compared to Dh12.4 billion in 2009 which is an increase of 6.45 per cent. Almost Dh11.2 billion came from hotels, and the rest came from hotel apartments.

Last year, the number of hotels and hotel rooms also increased. 30 new hotels were added which means new 7,600 rooms. The total number of hotels is now 382.
Guest nights across all types of properties increased by 17 per cent to 26.6 million last year, up from 22.8 million in 2009. That means there is an average of about three nights stay per guest. The five most important source markets are United Kingdom, India, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United States.

The hotel occupancy rate remained flat at 70 per cent for the past two years. On certain occasions, Dubai’s hotels have witnessed nearly 100 per cent occupancy and it’s expected that it goes up this year. Peter Goddard, Managing Director of TRI Hospitality Consulting based in Dubai, believes that the occupancy level may drop by five per cent next year because of the fact that there is more supply than demand. He also has the opinion that they don’t have to worry unless the occupancy level drops to 50 per cent because compared to a western country the breakeven point in Dubai is much lower.

One reason for the increase of the tourism is the improved marketing of the DTCM which cooperates with partners in the public and private sectors to promote the emirate in new international markets.
Therefore, every year hundreds of inward missions in the tourism sector and the media were invited to promote and showcase new projects and update their information.

Most of the tourists love Dubai because of the sandy beaches, big shopping malls, luxury hotels and the entertainment program. The differences between modern aspects and tradition make the city very special.
