“CRY LIKE A LITTLE GIRL” TAKES ON A NEW MEANING WITH THE CAPE PROJECTApril 8, 2011- Chicago, IL- Today marks the premiere opening of the The Cape Project, a photography exhibit aimed at showing society the immense strength that girls and women possess while empowering females to own these strengths. Chicago-based photographer, Saundra Karol, unveils the project at her studio in conjunction with the Chicago Arts District''s 2nd Fridays Gallery Night.
In a society where inequality among the sexes remains a distinct issue even in this modern age, The Cape Project is erasing fictitious notions of there being a weaker sex. The project shows that females are every bit as strong as their male counterparts (many times more so) and deserve the same respect and value.
Each participant is asked to look within and acknowledge her strengths, affirm it in writing, then pose for a portrait wearing a cape, a symbolic gesture of heroism and strength.
“As soon as the cape goes on, each female seems to be transformed- their eyes light up, they stand a little taller, and they look like they're ready to take on the world!” Saundra states. “I'm starting to think I should order more capes because it won't be long before women start wanting to take them home!”
In doing this project, Saundra hopes to see a change in how women and girls view themselves and how others perceive them. In gaining more respect and value for females, she hopes to hear fewer words and phrases used that demean females, see wage gaps decrease, and show society who really wears the capes.
