On May 6, 2011, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) ordered 21 medical device manufacturers, including Johnson & Johnson, Zimmer and Stryker, to conduct post-market analysis to determine whether their metal-on-metal hip replacement implants put patients at an increased risk for chromium and cobalt poisoning. The FDA has recently faced increased scrutiny in light of the massive August 2010 recall of DePuy’s ASR hip implant, a metal-on-metal hip replacement. By requiring hip manufacturers to conduct post-market studies, the FDA hopes to gather accurate information regarding the potential risk of metal poisoning associated with metal-on-metal implants.
