Nottingham sees New Learner Driver Initiative
An innovative scheme designed to save parents of learner drivers hundreds of pounds comes to Nottingham next month. The initiative, already running in Grantham for the past two years, is named Learnerclub, and it aims to cut the cost of learning to drive by up to 50%Launched in 2009 by driving instructor Robert Lukies, the scheme was the first of its kind in the country. The premise is that parents hire out dual control cars, like those used by driving instructors, and supervise their child’s learning themselves, thereby reducing the number of driving lessons needed.
Parents also save money on insurance as, rather than paying to insure the family car, the dual control cars are already insured. All members of the scheme have to pay is membership and a small rental charge.
Before a parent can hire a car, they must complete an induction course with a Learnerclub instructor, to prove knowledge of essential driving skills, and to learn how to operate the dual controls.
Robert explains how he came up with the idea of Learnerclub: “The majority of people who want to learn to drive use a qualified driving instructor and on average will need between 40-50 hours of tuition, as well as 15-20 hours of practice with a parent or friend. One hour of driving tuition can cost up to £25, and the cost of (...) insurance can be anything from £500-£1000. This makes the cost of learning to drive in excess of £1500 (...).
“A large proportion of driving lessons are sent practising car control skills (...) Much of this practice could be safely conducted by a parent or friend who has held a full licence for three years.”
Now the scheme is coming to Nottingham. The first of Learnerclub’s dual control cars will be available for hire from a supermarket in Gamston and will be used for lessons mainly around the West Bridgford area of the city. More cars will be rolled out over the next few weeks.
Learnerclub offer dual control cars for hire by learner drivers, allowing them to practice their driving in between lessons. The programme is designed to save learners and parents money by cutting down on the cost of insurance and the number of driving lessons needed.
The business was started in 2009 by driving instructor Robert Lukies, and was the first of its kind in the country.
