The new Viper Vertical Lift Module (VLM) from Sapient Automation recovers up to 85% of the floor space, provides unequaled ergonomic access to the items and reduces order-picking labor by 2/3 in small parts and items storage and retrieval operations.

The Viper VLM is an enclosed system of vertically arranged trays, an extraction platform and computerized controls that deliver stored items to an ergonomically positioned workstation. It can hold large, irregularly shaped items, as well as totes, containers and pallets and can be fitted with tray partitions and dividers for small items.

The modular vertical design of the Viper VLM takes advantage of unused overhead space to recover floor space that can be used for value added operations. The system’s variable height adjustment feature allows it to be made taller or shorter and moved at any time to meet changes in order picking activity.

The Viper VLM’s dynamic tray height sensor optimizes its storage density, automatically directing the storage tray to the least amount of space possible within the unit.

Using features such as ViperTilt™ tray delivery system, LaserViper™ Pick to Light System, and dual tray delivery, organizations can improve order picking productivity and throughput. ViperTilt delivers selected trays and ergonomically tilts them in the pick window for easy access to stored items.

LaserViper is a pick-to-light system that places a red dot on the item to be picked, increasing operator picking speed and accuracy. The tray and work counter move automatically to each operator’s preferred height, eliminating excessive stretching and bending. For increased system throughput, turbo dual tray delivery brings the next tray to the work counter the moment the operator is finished picking from the first tray.

The Viper VLM features a rack and pinion drive that provides high levels of positioning accuracy, even for heavy loads, and requires less maintenance than chains and belts.

Removable side panels allow 100% access for maintenance and emergency retrieval, and make the Viper VLM useable in refrigerated, freezer and other temperature and humidity controlled applications. The Viper Vertical Lift Module (VLM) provides vertical storage by having two columns of trays (front and back) with a robotic inserter/extractor device running down the center. The operator simply uses a click of a button, scan of a bar code or voice command to deliver the required parts or items to the operator at an ergonomically positioned work counter. In fact, the height of the tray delivery can be personalized for each user’s exact needs. Likewise, a tilt tray system called ViperTilt™ will deliver the tray and tilt it up so an operator can easily reach the entire tray without reaching, stretching and bending and a laser Pick to Light system called LaserViper will place a red dot to a fraction of an inch on the exact item to be picked to increase accuracy.

Sapient Automation is also a leader in creating and implementing systems utilizing the Hornet Horizontal Carousel which is comprised of a series of bins with shelves that rotate on a track horizontally. Multiple horizontal carousels are used in one integrated workstation called a pod. A wave of orders is downloaded to the workstation. Batches of eight to ten orders are then sent to the carousels. The carousels will begin rotating automatically and stop at the first pick. A Pick to Light Lightree directs the picker as to which carousel, the item and quantity to pick. The picker completes the batch in a round robin fashion until the batch is complete. The orders are then sent to shipping or the next workstation and the next batch is started until the entire wave is completed.
