LEGO Education Innovation Studio opens in Hamburg

Secretary of Education for Hamburg attends the launch of the LEGO® Education Innovation Studio at the Richard-Linde-Weg Academy

Students at the Richard-Linde-Weg Academy along with the Secretary of Education for Hamburg Ties Rabe, and LEGO® Education celebrated the opening of their new LEGO Education Innovation Studio last week.

The Studio provides an innovative and creative space for the students to study and learn. It incorporates storage, durable, multifunctional furniture and at the heart of the Studio are the LEGO Education products, resources and lesson materials.

Experiences with the LEGO Education projects being run in the Studio are already winning over the students - increasing their interest in Science and Technology. The concept of hands on learning is becoming more important and the students are fascinated with the technology, especially the girls, who are representing the increasing proportion of young women in technical disciplines.

The Studio is also encouraging team work, promoting students to interact with one another, which is an essential skill required in the real working world. The School will be promoting the use of the Innovation Studio with students from the age of 5 across all disciplines, particularly within Science and Technology.

Ward Van Duffel, Managing Director of LEGO Education Europe said ‘It’s vitally important for young people to discover Mathematics, IT, Science and Technology, along with creativity, problem-solving and co-operation. They are our next generation of Engineers, Scientists and Mathematicians and we hope that LEGO Innovation Studios can be the first stage in developing the skills needed for these roles.

‘We hope to inspire teachers and students to look at these subjects in a different way.’

The new school year sees a new initiative being launched aimed at year 9 students called Discover, Research, Inform. The Innovation Studio is being used to run the new school initiative as it was felt to be the ideal location because of its stimulating environment and wide range of resources available.
The Academy are also keen that the benefits that the Innovation Studio brings reaches out to a much wider audience and will be used to support all primary schools in the area to collaborate and promote technology and will also be used as a teacher training hub.
