Therapeutic Singing Classes with Deborah Hudson

We all know that singing generally is both good for the soul and good for our health. Choir singing in particular can make an awful lot of people very happy. Breathing and heart beats synchronise. The sheer joy of sharing music is transformative for all concerned.

But supposing you lack the self-belief even to get to the point of thinking you can one day join a choir. What do you do then?

We can all be shy about the sound we make when we sing. Oftentimes we can't copy the exact pitch of the song we want to sing along to. Or we feel we need to sound professional before we even open our mouths to have a go in the first place. Intimidated by endless TV competitions and critical social media there are people who would love to sing but feel they somehow aren't entitled to: “Singing isn't for someone like me. It's for other people”.

Well this is not the case!

If there is one thing we can all do it is sing because it is through pitching emotion that we communicate our deepest needs. How we raise and lower the pitch of our voices tells the listener what we are feeling. Language comes later. This is why music doesn't recognise borders. It's what makes us remember we are all human. It reminds us we have more in common than that which separates us.

When Deborah Hudson started to teach, and particularly after she wrote her little book, she found more and more that people were coming to her because they simply wanted to feel better. They wanted to connect with their sense of self through the practice of sound making.

She discovered too that she was being recommended by therapists, GPs and psychiatrists as her work was helping their patients. By focusing on deep breathing, sound making, pitching and those feelings released by exercising the singing muscles, students were helping themselves to heal. Many were regaining confidence after some terrible life events. Hearing yourself sing, freely and well is a fantastic, moving experience.

Thus her concept of Therapeutic Singing Classes was born: https://singdeborahhudson.com/therapeutic-singing/

We live in some very angry times. On many platforms performance is being mistaken for self-expression. We say and do things for effect, not because in our hearts we think that way. Therapeutic Singing is a way of discovering ourselves, who we are and how we really feel.

You can't cheat the body! It will tell us where the tensions are, where our lifestyle has affected us and gives us a chance to heal through exercises and the practice of taking notice.

The body doesn't do Post-Truth. In an age where so much is distorted we can return to our bodies and learn how to heal our pasts, how to create a sound which matches how we are, how we feel, in this moment.

With Therapeutic singing you don't need to have an audience. You don't need a platform. You don't need any apparatus or any special clothes.

You just need YOU.
