The Discovery Eye Foundation Hosts Screening Honoring Famed Director Arthur Hiller

Los Angeles, CA, April 9, 2012—The Discovery Eye Foundation, a leading nonprofit that supports research, education, and advocacy related to sight-threatening eye-diseases and their treatments, will host a special screening of The Americanization of Emily starring Julie Andrews and James Garner, honoring the famed director Arthur Hiller. The event will take place on April 22, 2012, at 2pm at The Linwood Dunn Theater, Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study.

“We are pleased to be honoring Arthur Hiller because of the great storytelling he was able to do through film,” said Dr. Anthony B. Nesburn, medical director of the Discovery Eye Foundation. “For him to lose so much of his vision due to age-related macular degeneration has been very hard for him, and he has a moving story to tell about that experience.”

Arthur Hiller, who is struggling with macular degeneration (AMD), is known for directing 33 major studio releases including such classics as Outrageous Fortune, The Out-of-Towners, Making Love, The In-Laws, Plaza Suite and Love Story, for which he was honored with a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination. Mr. Hiller was presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences during the 74th annual Academy Awards in 2002.

Mr. Hiller was president of the Director's Guild of America (DGA) from 1989-1993 and has been involved in numerous charitable organizations such as the Motion Picture & Television Fund, KCET, Amnesty International, Deaf Arts Council, Inner City Filmmakers, the Anti-Defamation League and the Venice Family Clinic.

A native of Canada, a former member of the Royal Canadian Air Force and a graduate of the University of Toronto where he earned a Master's degree in psychology, Mr. Hiller has received numerous honors from his country, including the prestigious ORDER OF CANADA.

The event will be held on Sunday, April 22, 2012, at The Linwood Dunn Theater Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study on 1313 Vine Street, Hollywood, CA 90028. There will be a reception at 2:00 pm followed by the screening of the film and a Q&A at 3:00 pm. Tickets are $50.00 and all proceeds will benefit AMD research and the Macular Degeneration Partnership, a program of The Discovery Eye Foundation.
