New York, NY – May 3, 2012 -- A recent report by nutrition specialist Joseph Mercola, MD, concerns the hazards associated with drinking soda. If you have switched to diet varieties to save on calories or just to eliminate sugar, you are still making a huge health mistake, he says. Mercola equates soda consumption with smoking and makes a case for it actually being worse.

“Most soda is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which has been linked to the epidemic rise of obesity, diabetes, heart disease along with other chronic diseases,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). “The use of HFCS started in the late 1970s. In the past 30 years, the amount of HFCS used in soda and other processed foods has skyrocketed. It has almost replaced sugar because it is a much sweeter and cheaper ingredient compared to sugar.”

“Cigarette companies are prohibited from marketing to children and adolescents; however, this is the main target market for the soda industry,” adds Dian. “They have a huge advertising budget along with teams of marketing experts. They also often fund studies to refute any link between soda consumption and health problems along with sponsoring ‘health education’ programs. Artificial sweeteners have been linked to many health issues such as cancers, headaches, seizures, fatigue, sleep disorders, joint pain, weight gain asthma and gastrointestinal problems, to name a few.”

“A diet high in sugar has been shown to have an adverse effect on behavior,” says Tom. “It is more important than ever to educate your children about making healthy choices. You also need to set the example for them. Eliminating all soda and soft drinks from you home and avoiding them when you eat out is a really good start.”
