Flatey Island
Flatey Island takes you back to the 1900s. It features seasonal habitation and is quite a small island. Even so, during summertime, it can be busy. There are many photographers that visit because of how beautiful the area is. You can do that, of course, but if you visit during winter, there won’t be many around.
Once on the island, check out the library and the church. You can watch the birds and sea, relax, clear your head, and have the time of your life.
Holuhraun Lava
This formation is quite new and is a lava-flow mountain close to Holuhraun. Between August of 2014 and February of 2015, there was a volcanic eruption that happened. This is what created the area. Nowadays, it is not that easy to access and you need to rent a vehicle with 4WD to do this. Even so, it is worth it, as the area is raw and unaffected by modern man.
Stakkholtsgja Canyon
This canyon is close to Porsmork and you only need to hike for around two hours to reach the beautiful waterfall inside it. The hike is actually very easy and you can go with your entire family. You will enjoy the entire trip, especially the river close to it.
The truth is that you can enjoy every canyon in the country as a true treat. But this one is among the best and you will love all the photo opportunities you get.
Hornstrandir Nature Reserve
Hornstrandir is the most inaccessible region of the country and it is the Northernmost part of the area known as Westfjords. You cannot reach the area via a road. You can only take a hike that lasts a week or a boat that leaves from Isafjorour.
In this nature reserve, there are no villages or shops. This means you need camping gear and food. But once you get there, you can enjoy a huge colony of arctic foxes.
Pakgil Camping Ground
You can find this beautiful camping ground in Iceland’s south side close to the Vik village. You go east from the village, then turn left after around 6 km. After 14 km and past Game of Thrones sets that were abandoned, you reach a valley surrounded by small rivers and rugged mountains.
The wind is not strong here and you can dine inside a cave, which is always a huge advantage. The only problem is that you need to drive to get to the camping ground.
Viknaslodir Hiking Trails
Finally, these hiking trails are close to Borgarfjordur Eystri. The English meaning for this is Trails Of The Inlets and covers five to 10 days. The most common one starts from Borgarfjordur Eystri and goes to Seydisfjordur. It lasts four days and covers 55 kilometers.
