Islamic Month and Their Importance
The monthly calendar plays an essential role in setting important dates and times in the lives of its followers. Calendars of various religions and regions are made in order to keep track of special traditions, occasions, and holidays, such as Gregorian, Chinese, and Hijri. The Moon's shape and movements cause such charts to include around 30 days in each month since such charts are based on the shifting Moon. The concept of the timetable is also shared by Islam. The Islamic calendar is called the Lunar or Hijri calendar. It consists of 12 months as the Gregorian calendar. Muslims around the globe use Islamic Calendar (Hijri) to keep track of religious observances and events. The following is the list of Islamic months according to the Islamic calendar:
Muharram
According to the Islamic calendar, Muharram ( https://kort.org.uk/maximise-your-rewards-in-muharam/ ) is the first month, and the meaning of Muharram is forbidden. Fighting and all types of battles are prohibited (ḥarām) during this month. Muharram is the 'sacred month' because Allah Almighty mentions it in the Quran.
Quran says:
“Four of them (Zil-Qadah, Zil-ijjah, Muharram and Rajab) are sacred.”
(Surah At-Tawbah: 36)
Ashura occurs on the tenth day of Muharram. Imam Hussain Ibn Ali, the grandson of Hazrat Muhammad (SAW), was killed at Karbala on the 10th of Muharram. In order to honor Allah Almighty, people fast and make donations in this month.
“Allah’s messenger ordered (the Muslims) to fast on the day of ‘Ashura, and when fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed, it became optional for one to fast on that day (Ashura) or not.” (Sahih Al Bukhari)
Safar
The Arabic word "Safar" means "void" and this is the second Islamic month. It is said that pre-Islamic Arabs were gathering food in their empty houses during this period.
“I have heard the Prophet saying, the descending of illness and evil superstition befalling in the month of Safar is untrue.” (Muslim)
Our Prophet SAW's beloved daughter Hazrat Fatima (R.A.) married Hazrat Ali (R.A.) in the month of Safar. There were also two battles, one played on 2A.H. and another on 7A.H., in Safar as well as the wedding. Furthermore, Khubaib Ibn Adney and Zaid Ibn Dathina (R.A) both died martyrs this month in the year 4 A.H. In Makkah.
Rabi-ul-Awwal
Rabi-ul-Awwal is the third Islamic month, and ‘Rabi-ul-Awwal means ‘the first spring’ in Arabic.
Spring officially begins with the Rabi-ul-Awwal season. Therefore, spring is its meaning. In this month, the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was born. During this month, Muslims celebrate the birth of Hazrat Muhammad SAW by performing their good deeds. Furthermore, give charity ( https://kort.org.uk/donations/sadaqah/ ) and donate to celebrate the birthday of Holy Prophet SAW. Additionally, this month marked the migration of Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Medina.
Rabi-ul-Thani
Rabi-ul-Thani is the fourth month of Islamic calendar. It is also known as Rabi ul-Akhir. Two important events occur in the second month of spring, according to the Islamic calendar. The most notable event that took place in this month is the battle of Furu' from Buhraan, which took place in the third Muslim year. The holy prophet did not participate in this battle, but he did send one of his companions to represent him instead. The second was the death of Hazrat Khwaja Nizammudin, and Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani, both of them 90 years old.
Jumad-ul-Thani
In the Islamic calendar, it's the fifth month. This month includes a very memorable event of Prophet Mohammed SAW and Hazrat Khadija. Prophet Mohammed SAW married Khadija in this month, 15 years before he became a prophet.
In this month, the Battle of Moota took place on the 8th of A.H. The Prophet SAW was not involved in this war against the infidels; its name was derived from the famous city in Syria, Moota. The Prophet SAW appointed Hazrat Zaid Ibn Haritha (R.A) as its first general.
Jumad-ul-Thani:
Jumad-ul-Thani is the 6th month of the Hijri calendar. A major battle called the Yarmouk battle occurred in Islamic history as well. Hazrat Abu Bakr died on the 22nd day of Jamada al-Thani 13 H at the age of 63. Umar bin Khattab was appointed as the second Caliph to replace Abu Bakr (RA) at the same time and same month.
Rajab
On the Islamic calendar, this is the seventh month. On the 27th of Rajab on either Sunday or Monday (Mi'raaj) the Holy Prophet SAW began his journey to Heaven. This is why seeking forgiveness from Allah (SWT) this month is highly recommended. Our Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:
“Rajab is a month of seeking forgiveness, so seek forgiveness from Allah (SWT); He is verily the Forgiver, the Merciful. It is highly recommended to repeat ‘Astaghfirullah WA as-aluhut taubah'”
Shabaan
The 8th month of Islam has its own importance. The fifteenth night of Sha'baan marks "Laila-tulBaraa'at (Night of Forgiveness)," one of the most important events of this month. This month, in addition to the Kaaba in Makah being changed back to the direction to be faced during salah, the Qibla, which had previously been changed to BaitulMuqaddis in Jerusalem for a short period of time.
Ramadan
The Islamic calendar's most honorable month is Ramadan. The compulsory fasting took place from dawn until sunset during this time, with fasting being the fourth pillar of Islam. This month also revealed the Holy Quran and at the same time is also the night of power (Laylat al-Qadr), the best of the nights of a thousand and more months. During this month, Muslims were also encouraged to give more to charity ( https://kort.org.uk/zakat-reminder/ ).
Shawwal
Allah rewards Muslims with the gift of Eid ul Fitr on the first day of Shawwal after the month-long fasting in Ramadan, as well as forgiving their sins. Fasting for 6 days in this month is Sunnah as directed by the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
Dhu al-Qa‘dah
It is the third of the sacred months during this month, fighting is prohibited. A person can defend himself or herself if attacked.
Dhu-al-Hijjah
This month is when Muslims from all over the world begin to congregate in Makah to visit the Kaaba. In this month, the eighth, ninth, and tenth of this month will be Hajj days. Arafah is celebrated on the ninth day of each month. Eid al-Adha, also known as the "Festival of Sacrifice", begins on the tenth day of the month and ends on the twelfth at sunset, and during this time all war is prohibited.
