UK Ultrasonic Flow Measurement Company Recruits Internationally Recognised PhD, Dr Keith Kirby

Dramatic growth at Detectronic, the UK water instrumentation specialist, has prompted the appointment of Dr Keith Kirby as director of research and development. Dr Kirby’s role will be to build on the international success of Detectronic’s ultrasonic flow meter, the Multi Sensor Flow Monitor (MSFM), developing a new generation of hydrological survey equipment for the water industry.

Dr Kirby, a fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, is a chartered engineer, physicist and scientist. Holding an MSc in electronic control engineering he achieved a PhD for work on ultrasonic flow measurement. A key team member in the early Detectronic as research and development manager, in 1993 his career led him to consumer electronics specialist Pace Plc. Here he was part of the engineering team that developed the Sky Plus set-top box working with leading hard disk manufacturers in the USA to develop a product specific to this market. He lived and worked in India for 18 months as part of the team that set-up Pace’s Bangalore research and development facility.

Detectronic, managing director Steve Woods commented, “Keith applies his knowledge of physics, electronics and engineering to complex problems to produce robust workable solutions. He is a true technologist and we are delighted to have him back in the team to maintain technical leadership in our segment. Keith is reviewing the flow monitoring product range so that we improve our methods of manufacture and can optimise measurement performance. There are new sensors using different technologies available that will create further opportunities to extend the product range in the water industry and commercial applications.”

Speaking about his return to the hydrological survey instrumentation industry, Dr Kirby observed, “It’s good to be working with the original team again at the new Detectronic just as the company is growing rapidly and there are so many new water industry challenges. Problem solving is what I do best.”
