DEFENCE MODERNISATION INDIA SUMMIT

Of all the elements of national power, a country’s Economy and Defence occupy front ranks. This is because the strategic power of a nation is directly proportional to its economic might and defence prowess. Indian military aviation went through its first phase of modernisation during the mid sixties and the second phase was in the late seventies to early eighties. Today India’s military aviation is poised for modernisation on a scale unprecedented.

Modernization has been a continuous need in order to make the Armed Forces effective and efficient.

While the army has drawn up elaborate plans for modernisation and qualitative upgradation of its capabilities, the pace of modernisation has been rather slow due to the lack of adequate funding support and timely decision making. India’s defence budget is pegged at less than 2.0 per cent of the GDP at present. According to Defence Minister A K Antony, “New procurements have commenced… but we are still lagging by 15 years.” Unless immediate measures are taken to speed up the pace of modernisation, the present quantitative military gap with China will soon become a qualitative gap as well. The upcoming Defence Modernisation India (DMI) Summit would deliberate crucial aspects of transforming the Indian Armed Forces into a technologically advanced lean, mean, agile force.

As India grows in its stature as a resilient economic power on the world stage, the aspect of maintaining internal and external security has also increased simultaneously. With increasing requirement of energy resources and rapidly changing geo-politcs in its neighbourhood, the necessity to enhance India’s economic and energy security has become paramount.

India is now a strong economy with an average growth rate of around 9 percent. Increased defense budgets allow Indian Armed Forces to go for more advanced, reliable and technologically sophisticated western weapon systems.
