Efficient Lighting: Building awareness is the first step

At the onset of Fleming Gulf's GCC INFRA - Lighting Concepts Summit in Doha, Qatar, industry practitioners are gearing up to what promises to be a platform that provides a global perspective on solutions that are impacting the world of lighting. Little is known that the lighting sector can contribute greatly to the economy of a country by serving as a power saving system that allows electricity to be used on other utilitarian necessities. Awareness of fundamental concepts such as light matching, task lighting, use of energy-efficient lighting systems and leveraging the use of day lighting will carve a path to sustainable and intelligent lighting designs on the GCC region for the years to come.
Dr. Yasser Mahgoub, Associate Professor - Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, Qatar University and speaker at the summit shared his insights on GCC market in context to the awareness levels & business opportunities that architectural lighting offer. “The GCC market is developing rapidly and is an excellent business opportunity for lighting industry and consultants. No generalization can be made on the awareness level regarding architectural lighting. While we find state of the art lighting concepts and designs in contemporary modern buildings designed by leading architects from around the world, we also find lack of awareness regarding lighting design in many private housing, gated communities, commercial facilities urban areas and public spaces. The market is also suffering from cheap imported materials and fixtures. There is a need to increase public awareness on the difference between quantity and quality and using the local language. Many messages are sent using English language and Western cultural references that are only received by expatriates, foreigners and few English speaking locals.”
He shared his opinion on the current industry trends and developments that will be influencing the architectural lighting industry in the coming decade - “I envision that the future trend during the next 10 years will continue to be influenced by the implementation of the strategic master plans. These will result in the construction of many new cities (Lusail and Silk City) and mega urban developments (Msherieb Project). Also, global events hosted in the GCC countries such as the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Doha, world conferences and conventions, will require special design and consultation skills. Meanwhile, attention to the needs of the small scale residential and commercial buildings should be realized through attractive design solutions.” Dr. Yasser Mahgoub will be addressing developers, designers & consultants on the 14th & 15th of May, 2013 in Doha on lighting and spatial design experience, a unique human censorial presentation.
