A synthetic, semicrystalline organic polymer resin is called polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Even though it is thermoplastic, polyacrylonitrile doesn't melt in normal temperatures. It only melts above 300°C  if the heating speeds are at 50 degrees or more per minute. Since acrylonitrile is the main monomer in a mixture of monomers, copolymers, which make up the majority of polyacrylonitrile resins, are composed of copolymers.

October 14, 2022: Sinopec's production line now uses carbon fibre and PAN (polyacrylonitrile) base big tow precursor technologies that were both self-developed by the company. It is anticipated that the project, which is being carried out in two stages, will be fully operational in 2024, with a capacity for producing 12,000 tonnes of big tow carbon fibre and 24,000 tonnes of protofilament per year.
