Development of leadership: Tension between culture and structure is dysfunctional

There is probably tension in every organization. Productive tension is essential, if anything is to be accomplished. Contradictions that are too great result in dysfunctional tension - out of which nothing good will arise, Dr. Felix Frei states in his new publication "The final 33 Leadership Letters".

The psychologist and consultant believes "that nowadays it is the psychological tension between culture and structure that is most dysfunctional. This can be seen in the way culture and structure today develop in such different ways. Very briefly:

Structure is proliferating, as clearly evidenced by the increase in bureaucratization and standardization. Consequently, many aspects of management are substituted - or threaten to be neglected. One result of this development is a tendency towards centralization, whereby this process is managed and controlled. The scope for decision-making at a local level is becoming increasingly limited. On a structural level, cycles of renewal often makes it impossible to enjoy the harvest of what one has sown.

Culture is proclaimed as a panacea for all the world´s ills in the belief that everything will proceed according to one´s expectations so long as the appropriate culture prevails. Appropriate meaning a culture of independence, personal responsibility, initiative, autonomy and entrepreneurial approach to every level. The fact that this culture could be in an inextricable, unproductive relationship to current structural trends is usually blanked out. Against this background it is hardly surprising that appeals for culture go unheeded."
