Electron beam processing is a technology with a broad range of commercial applications. It provides users with an effective and efficient means to bring about useful changes in the properties and performance of polymers and other materials. The technology is also widely used for the sterilization of medical devices, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Electron beam accelerators can be made in a number of ways: cathode ray tubes (CRT) that sweep or scan the process area, electron wide-area curtains and sealed vacuum tube systems. There are several different methods to accelerate electrons to form a beam. The accelerators used by E-BEAM Services are direct current, which provide a continuous versus a pulsed beam. Electrons are extracted from a electron gun located within in a high level vacuum system. The electrons are accelerated by a magnetic field of three to five million volts and scanned into a curtain of electrons. The electrons then exit the vacuum system through a thin titanium foil, where they strike the product that is being conveyed at a controlled speed through the curtain of electrons.

At present, electron linear accelerators are the primary equipment of a modern radiotherapy department, and are used to irradiate a large proportion of the patients for at least part of the treatment. Nowadays, the majority of the patients referred to a radiation therapy department are treated with a linear accelerator for at least part of their treatment.

• Low and Mid Energy
Low and Mid Energy: The low energy accelerators range from 150 keV to 300 keV. Single gap, self-shielded sheet beam systems without beam scanning. Beam currents from 10 to 2000 mA; treat 1 to 3 m wide material. Used for curing thin film coatings and cross-linking laminates and single strand wire. The mid energy accelerators range from 300 keV to 5 MeV. Scanned beam dc systems capable of 25 to 200 kW beam power; scanned beam width up to ~2 meters. Used for cross-linking and polymerization of thicker materials, and for sterilization of medical products.
• High Energy
High energy scanned beam systems capable of 25 to 700 kW beam power. Used for medical product sterilization and cross-linking and polymerization of even thicker materials. They are also used as x-ray generators for food irradiation, waste water remediation, and gemstone color enhancement for topaz and diamonds. The high energy accelerators range from 5 MeV to 10 MeV.
