Polyimide (PI) is a remarkable high-performance engineering polymer renowned for its outstanding resistance to extreme temperatures and harsh chemicals. This extraordinary material is synthesized through a condensation polymerization reaction between aromatic primary diamines and aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydrides. Several production processes are employed to manufacture Polyimide, including the one-step, two-step, three-step routes, among others.
In the one-step method, the dianhydride and diamine are directly polymerized in a solvent with a high boiling point. The choice of reaction solvent is crucial in this process. The two-step process is the most commonly used due to the polyamic acid's unstable and sensitive nature, particularly in the presence of moisture. In this approach, the dianhydride and diamine are first reacted to form polyamic acid, which is then either chemically imidized or subjected to high-temperature heating. This process involves dehydration and ring closure, resulting in imidized polyimide. Chemical imidization not only enhances productivity but also improves the physical and chemical properties of the resulting Polyimide.
In China, the majority of polyimide manufacturers employ the two-step process and thermal imidization method. Polyimide resin can be classified into alipharomatic, aliphatic, and aromatic resin based on the type of aromatic or aliphatic dianhydride and diamine monomers used. Aliphatic polyimide contributes to the resin's transparency, while aromatic polyimide enhances its strength.
Polyimide resin showcases exceptional dielectric properties, mechanical strength, stress tolerance, acid and solvent resistance, moisture barrier properties, radiation resistance, and transparency ranging from transparent to amber color. Its most notable attribute is its remarkable high-temperature stability, with a glass transition temperature exceeding 330°C.
The global market for polyimide resins is estimated to be around 30 kilo tons and is projected to triple in size during the forecast period. Asia Pacific, North America, and Western Europe collectively represent over 95% of the global demand for Polyimide. The electrical & electronics and semiconductor industries are the primary consumers of Polyimide, accounting for more than 70% of the global market share.

• Samsung Display is exploring the use of colorless polyimide substrates for their foldable OLED panels. This will enhance light penetration and improve picture quality in the camera.
• During the year 2021, Kolon Industries provided flexible and transparent PI Films for the cover window of Xiaomi's foldable smartphone, the Mi MIX FOLD.
• Kolon and SKC have been chosen as suppliers of PI films to serve as protective cover window films for the ASUS Zenbook 17-fold OLED. These foldable OLED panels will be manufactured by BOE, a Chinese display producer, and production is scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2022.
