Ballet by Daniel Garbade

Ballet by Daniel Garbade

The PHotoEspaña festival in Madrid is showing the works of the Swiss artist Daniel Garbade in Belenartspace
For the third time, the artist has been invited to present his latest works in Madrid as part of the Festival Off by PHotoEspaña. In July, for example, Belenartspace is presenting its "Corps de blancs" exhibition, a selection from its most recent series in which photography contrasts with painting.
July 25th to September 29th at Belenartspace, Calle Belén 5, 28004 Madrid
Four men stand side by side in sync and we wonder about their next move. As if we were in a ballet, the Swiss artist Daniel Garbade (Zurich 1957) shows us figures a second before the movement.
A corps de ballet
Just as a corps de ballet functions as a unit, the figures in its paintings are synchronized. Through repeated movements and postures, as well as complex compositions, the artist emphasizes the personality of each individual model, while creating a work bordering on abstraction that leads the viewer to question what they are actually seeing. Shown are men and youth, in different settings, all sharing a sense of nostalgia.
Between photography and painting
Some figures appear static. Here the photographer uses a grainy resolution to give the images an antique look through his patina. Or is this not a photograph but a painting on canvas? His work moves on the border between photography and painting, so Belenartspace shows his large-format black and white paintings in oil on canvas next to his most recent series of photographs. All works could be photographs and vice versa, in his photographic works we find a representation and a filter that remind us of ancient drawings and paintings. In this way, Garbade draws a thread between today and yesterday.
