MIP Discovery achieves Silver LEAF lab status in its path to sustainable science

MIP Discovery has today announced that it has received Silver status in the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF), a sustainability standard for laboratories to reduce waste, energy, plastics and water in the lab.

Launched in August 2020, this new sustainability standard has been designed to reduce the environmental impact of laboratories across the UK. With just under 2% of global plastic consumption due to laboratories, there is a collective potential to make a huge impact on the environment. The framework looks at actionable ways to save plastics, water, energy and other resources. It also provides laboratories with a means of calculating carbon footprint, and recognizes efforts with a three-tier accreditation program, bronze, silver and gold.

MIP Discovery's core product offering naturally has the potential to deliver a positive environmental impact. The business produces nanoMIPs, synthetic affinity reagents that are used as an alternative to biological reagents such as antibodies. Biological reagents are inherently unstable and require temperature-controlled storage and transportation, which consumes significant amounts of energy. nanoMIPs however are completely synthetic, which makes them extremely stable, and reduces the need for cold storage and a temperature-controlled supply chain.
