MCD deploys tech-savvy cleaning machines ahead G20 summit

Delhi, August 30: With the much-awaited G-20 summit closing in, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has deployed advanced litter picking machines across the city to flex its Clean India and environment-friendly cleaning initiatives aimed at improving the national capital's sanitation.

The G-20 summit which will be held in New Delhi on September 9th and 10th will see the arrival of several world leaders. Leaving no stone unturned, the MCD has engaged several battery-operated 'Gobblers' to ensure a high standard of cleanliness. Equipped with a powerful suction mechanism, the Gobbler is set to provide a perfect alternative to the age-old manual sweeping while keeping pollution in check.

"These machines have been selected based on their efficient litter-picking mechanism. Similar to a bigger version of a vacuum cleaner, Gobbler has the ability to suck up concrete, wood, grass, plastic, paper and even aluminum waste. The machines will initially be used at crowded places like arterial roads, markets, and parks," said an official attached to the sanitation department of the MCD.

Manufactured by the Chandigarh-based manufacturing firm, Cosmic Healers Private Limited (CHPL), Gobbler is India's first indigenously-manufactured-battery-operated litter picker. With an in-built waste-collection tank the machine has the capacity to collect 240 litres of litter with high precision from roads, public places, markets, institutional and commercial areas.

The MCD in agreement with the CHPL has deployed Gobblers in market areas of Karol Bagh and South Extension. The round-the-clock operations of the machines is set to ensure the hygiene of the vicinities in a cost effective and environment-friendly manner. Sources said that based on their performance a decision will be taken to add more such state-of -the art machines in other locations.

"What's unique about this machine is that it has a PM 2.5 filter attached to it which does not allows the dust particles to disperse in the air. Thus, as compared to traditional manual sweeping or brooming the dust clouds are not formed while cleaning an area. Moreover, its easy manoeuvring and convenient mechanisms allow the operator to carry the functions smoothly," a senior engineer of CHPL explained.

It can be mentioned that the MCD is overseeing the cleanup of more than 44 arterial stretches, which involves the deployment of 704 field workers working daily double shifts and 132 mechanised cleaning equipment. Moreover, three types of machineries have been allocated for each road - mechanical road sweepers, anti-smog machines and water sprinkler.

With the event on the horizon, Delhi is set to see world's top leader from the U.S., France, Germany China, Brazil, among others. Along with partner nations, representatives of global organisations such as the UN, IMF, World Bank and WTO, will also congregate in the national capital. The members represent around 85% of the global GDP, over 75 % of global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.

While Delhi government has revamped and beautified various stretches, including Ring Road, Lodhi Road, Aurobindo Marg and Shantivan Road, the MCD has focused largely on increasing the number of sanitation workers and mechanised sweeping to present a neat and clean city.
