Wind River will help deliver handsets based on a complete, open and free next-generation mobile platform

Wind River announced that it has joined the Open Handset Alliance as a Linux commercialization partner. The Open Handset Alliance is the newly-formed mobile alliance committed to delivering comprehensive solutions to enable open software, open devices and an open ecosystem. Wind River will play a critical role in helping companies bring their mobile products to market based on Android, the platform announced today by the Alliance. The announcement further strengthens Wind River's position as one of the most trusted and reliable Linux partners in the device software industry.
Open Handset Alliance device manufacturers and other OEMs can work with Wind River to port the platform onto their respective hardware platforms and optimize it based on their specific requirements to deliver the greatest levels of silicon performance, including any necessary tuning of the Linux kernel. Further, Wind River will provide the Linux support necessary for OEMs and ISVs to complete their integrations quickly and effectively, dramatically simplifying the development and distribution of mobile applications. As a result, Linux-based phones will be brought to market faster with lower bill of material costs.

"Throughout its 25 years of leadership in the device software industry, Wind River has developed the technologies that help transform industries, and we believe our contributions to the Open Handset Alliance will remove the barriers that stand in the way of progress in the mobile device market," said Ken Klein, CEO and President, Wind River. "Wind River joined the Alliance to accelerate the defragmentation effort in open source mobile solutions. The Linux-based platform requires a leader in mobile and open source technologies and expertise to optimize the solution so OEMs and carriers may add differentiating services."
