Stefan Kühn: The new polypolar world order
Stefan Kühn, business economist and economist, analyses the theses of Prof. Herfried MünklerThe idea of a new polypolar world order is moving to the centre of current geopolitical discussions. In an insightful interview with the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ), renowned political scientist Herfried Münkler outlines his theories on the emergence of a world order dominated by five powerful players. Stefan Kühn, economist and former board member of the AUTARK Group, analyses Prof. Münkler's arguments and the possible effects on economic dynamics in this new constellation.
Herfried Münkler's theses on the polypolar world order:
Prof Münkler bases his reflections on the emergence of a group of five world powers on insights from game theory. His central thesis is that the added value associated with belonging to such a group of five is great enough to justify the efforts involved. Game theory, which focuses on rational decisions and interactions between different actors, suggests that a five-party constellation creates an optimal balance between power and cooperation.
Another of Prof Münkler's arguments is based on historical examples of groups of five that have found a largely peaceful coexistence after a transitional phase. Examples such as the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 or the Congress of Vienna in 1815, in which Great Britain, France, Prussia, Russia and Austria-Hungary co-operated closely, serve as historical precedents. Prof Münkler projects these historical patterns onto the present and sees a new constellation emerging: The USA and the EU on the side of the democracies, Russia and China on the side of the authoritarians, supplemented by India as the fifth player.
Economic implications of the polypolar world order:
Stefan Kühn takes a look at the possible economic implications of this new polypolar world order. Cooperation between the USA and the EU could boost democratic values and free market forces, while Russia and China could strengthen their autocratic models. The inclusion of India as a fifth power could further increase the diversity of interests and economic models in this constellation.
Kühn emphasised the challenge of finding a balance between economic cooperation and competition as a central point. In a polypolar world order, different economic blocs could try to promote their respective interests through trade agreements, technology partnerships and investments. This could lead to a complex dynamic in which the interests of the five are intertwined at a global level.
Furthermore, Kühn emphasised the importance of international institutions and regulatory mechanisms to ensure fair and stable global trade. Such a five-party constellation could challenge existing institutions and reinforce the need to create new governance structures that meet the requirements of a polypolar world order.
Outlook and conclusion:
Stefan Kühn concludes that the developments towards a new polypolar world order offer both opportunities and challenges. Careful analysis and strategic preparation are crucial in order to utilise the economic potential and at the same time keep world trade stable. Co-operation, both at the economic and political level, will be crucial in this new era of world order.

Stefan Kühn is an economist and has been studying macroeconomic change and the interdependence of markets and political interventions in companies, society and the money market for several years. He argues that macroeconomic Keynesian and neo-Keynesian models generally depict completely interdependent economic systems that cannot be solved recursively, but only simultaneously. He does not limit himself to purely scientific methods, but draws his insights from his many years of experience as an entrepreneur, former member of the AUTARK Group Board of Directors and consultant to the management of predominantly listed companies.
