Work Place Health At The Desk Doesn't Have To Be A Stretch
SINGAPORE, December 26, 2007 – Fighting off chronic back and neck pains just got easier with Take An ErgoBreak email reminders to take an exercise break at the office desk. Take An ErgoBreak is a new free service from Core Concepts – Physiotherapy Group, one of the largest private group in Singapore. In Singapore, some seven of out 10 working adults experience some form of neck, shoulder or back pains, one of the most common complaints in work place health. And this trend is on the rise. As Singapore shifts from manual-based to knowledge-based economy, working adults will inevitably spend more time at the computer. While knowledge based work is mentally challenging, it is relatively sedentary and physically unhealthy over long periods of time. This poor workplace health impacts directly on office productivity.
Taking frequent breaks for light exercises and stretches at the desk is a simple, low-cost but very effective solution. However following this simple advice has been a challenge for today's busy workers without frequent reminders to do so.
Sylvia Ho, a senior physiotherapist at Core Concepts, said, “We often advice our client to take frequent breaks and take a more active role in managing their health. A large number of our clients are often too busy in meetings or answering their emails to remember to take their breaks. So reminders by email seem like a natural choice.”
It is not uncommon for today's corporate employees to attend meetings without breaks for several hours at a stretch or hunched over a computer or laptop for 2-3 hours straight. The human body is not designed to remain stationary for pro-longed periods of time. Movement and light exercises are essential to help circulate blood and muscles recover from fatigue.
Frequent breaks are encouraged as the body takes an exponentially longer time to recover from muscle strain over a long period than from a shorter period. Substituting a 10-minute break every two hours for a 5-minute break every hour is insufficient for proper recovery. Nevertheless, some breaks are better than none at all.
'Take An ErgoBreak” is free service to help provide these email reminders in keeping back and necks healthy over the long term. Subscribers can sign up at www.CoreConcepts.com.sg/reminder.php. Subscribers can choose to be reminded every 45, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. Along with the emails are exercises and stretches that subscribers can choose to follow. No software is required to be installed at the subscribers end; avoiding the ire of the IT department. Users can choose to subscribe and unsubscribe at any time and as often as they like.
