There is no way around 3D planning in architecture, building modeling, BIM and mechanical CAD design, that has long been clear. Nevertheless, users are usually content with a two-dimensional representation on screens and, of course, on printouts. For a better insight, three-dimensional views are then created, models are rendered again and again, the design is checked from all sides and perspectives in 3D stereoscopic images, perhaps interactively visualized via an integrated VR glasses mode. But the work is not really three-dimensional throughout. Why not?

The previous output devices in combination with active or passive 3D glasses were simply not suitable for longer work. The resolution often left a lot to be desired, the frame rate and/or refresh rate were too low, the glasses were uncomfortable to wear, the stereo display was rather dark and active LCD glasses always flickered in the background. In short, the "3D stereo sensation" was rather flickering, unpleasant and tiring. In short - not 'sensational' at all.

VR headsets or glasses as an alternative?

With the exception of ELITECAD, very few CAD systems offer visualization via VR (virtual reality) as a directly integrated mode. If VR viewing is possible at all, users are usually limited to the pure VR view without any further functionality. For modifications, the user has to switch back to the monoscopic CAD environment and, if outsourced, also provide the data set again afterwards. An important aspect of VR use is that the real environment is completely blocked out by the VR headset. For an immersive experience, this is desirable and certainly impressive. However, as part of a larger planning project - possibly in the office together with other colleagues - it is desirable to be able to see something around you in the long term. Especially as VR glasses are relatively heavy, rest on the face like diving goggles and can cause discomfort if used for long periods. This is where 3D modeling using a 3D stereo workstation screen comes into play again.

The main benefit for users lies in the stereoscopic graphic output. The software generates two images of a scene that are exactly at eye distance from each other. This is the basic requirement for spatial vision. The simplest variant for stereoscopic viewing is red/green anaglyph glasses. However, stereoscopic double-screen monitors such as those in the 3D PluraView product family provide an incomparably better experience. Thanks to one display per eye, the absolutely flicker-free beam splitter technology delivers full monitor resolution up to 4K/UHD and therefore very high image sharpness with maximum detail accuracy, especially in the 3D stereo model. The optimum, double brightness and maximum color brilliance (up to 10 bit) allows the user to work comfortably and without fatigue. The new BlackTuner technology of the 3D PluraView (28 inch) supports the user, for example, in reliably detecting objects even in dark areas of the picture. A response time of just 1 ms eliminates "ghost images" and motion blur. The precise, pixel-perfect image evaluation therefore enables a spatial experience even in daylight without blocking out the surroundings. This experience is now additionally supported in ELITECAD by displaying tools such as cursors or markers at the correct depth. Furthermore, all necessary plug-and-play configurations for the use of 3D PluraView displays in ELITECAD Architecture 15 are already prepared. For all users who want to go one step further in the direction of virtual reality, Schneider Digital also offers its 3D PluraView monitor as a VR version with integrated head tracking and object control with tracking sticks or spheres.

For whom is the combination of 3D PluraView and ELITECAD suitable?

The complete solution consisting of ELITECAD and 3D PluraView is particularly useful in architectural planning and 3D modelling as well as in the field of 'BIM' (Building Information Modeling), especially in combination with laser scanning and point cloud visualization. With ELITECAD, it is possible to map the entire planning process stereoscopically throughout. The new software version for architectural planning and building modeling simplifies everyday planning and offers efficiency and ease of use. Not only because point clouds from laser scanners can be imported directly and visualized stereoscopically, but also because XEOMETRIC, together with Schneider Digital, has implemented the 3D mouse pointer perfectly in ELITECAD. Only when the mouse pointer is able to intuitively touch every point, surface or edge in 3D space (hologram) can the advantages of stereoscopic visualization be implemented in an efficiency-enhancing workflow.
