Developed by the prestigious Energy Environment Processes Center (CEEP) at Mines Paris-PSL, and deeptech startup SUBLIME Energie, this new technology promises to transform the landscape of biogas utilization, particularly for small and isolated farms.Biogas liquefaction has rarely been adopted in the past. Limited use has been seen in some Scandinavian countries, where Liquefied Biogas (LBG) has been used to fuel specially converted combustion engine vehicles. However, concerns over engine corrosion due to the impurity of this form of methane fuel have hindered its widespread adoption. Instead, the majority of large anaerobic digestion (AD) plants now upgrade their biogas on-site to biomethane, which is as pure as natural gas and can be injected into natural gas mains.
This, while it works well at-scale, is usually unaffordable for smaller biogas facilities that remain trapped into selling their output as electricity where for them the electric utility company is their only option.
