The Versatility of Syngas: A Review of Its Purification, Production, and Applications
Syngas, also known as synthesis gas, is a mixture of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and other gases produced through gasification of a carbon-containing fuel. Syngas has become an increasingly important intermediate product with a wide range of applications across the energy, chemical, and fuel industries. This article provides an overview of syngas purification processes, production methods, and applications.Syngas Purification
Raw syngas produced through gasification requires extensive cleaning and conditioning before utilisation. Key syngas contaminants include particulates, sulphur compounds, nitrogen compounds, mercury, and tar. Common syngas purification processes include:
• Particulate Removal: Cyclones, filters, electrostatic precipitators
• Acid Gas Removal: Solvent scrubbing, physical absorption, chemical absorption
• Sulphur Recovery: Claus process, wet gas scrubbing
• Nitrogen Removal: Cryogenic distillation
• Mercury Removal: Sorbent injection, activated carbon beds
Wet gas scrubbing is an important technique for removing tars and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from syngas. The contaminated syngas bubbles through a scrubber containing water and an organic solvent, often rapeseed methyl ester or biodiesel, sometimes combined with alcohols. The objective is to remove tars, which are a mixture of heavier hydrocarbons and compounds.
Once scrubbed, the cleaned syngas can be used in combustion engines or methanization systems. Ravebo has investigated using wet gas scrubbing to clean contaminated syngas with a high discharge temperature (less than 800°C).

Syngas Production
There are several ways to produce syngas including steam reforming, partial oxidation, autothermal reforming, and biomass gasification. Steam reforming involves reacting a hydrocarbon fuel with steam at high temperatures to produce syngas. Partial oxidation uses sub-stoichiometric amounts of oxygen to partially combust the fuel. Autothermal reforming combines partial oxidation and steam reforming in one reactor. Biomass gasification converts solid biomass fuels into syngas through partial oxidation at high temperatures. The composition of syngas varies depending on the production method and feedstock used.
Syngas Applications
Syngas has a diverse range of downstream uses and applications across multiple industries.
Power Generation
One of the main uses of syngas is for electricity production. Syngas can be used as a fuel for gas turbines, internal combustion engines, and fuel cells. The high hydrogen content of syngas results in lower carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional fossil fuels. Syngas can also be used as a precursor for synthetic natural gas.
Chemicals Production
Syngas is used as a feedstock for producing many important chemical compounds via catalytic synthesis. These chemicals include ammonia, methanol, hydrogen cyanide, and synthetic petroleum products. Converting syngas into liquid fuels and chemicals provides an alternative to extraction from petroleum.
Metal Production
The reducing capacity of syngas makes it useful for iron and steel production. Syngas can reduce iron ore to metallic iron in direct reduced iron processes as a replacement for coke. The hydrogen content of syngas is also utilized in specialty metal production.
Syngas is a versatile intermediate product with a diverse range of production methods and applications. Its high hydrogen content makes it a lower-emission fuel versus traditional hydrocarbons. Syngas also serves as a building block for many key industrial chemicals and processes. Extensive gas conditioning and purification is necessary to achieve the purity requirements for syngas utilisation. As the world looks to transition away from traditional fossil fuels, syngas is likely to play an increasingly important role across the energy, fuel, and chemical sectors.
