Rediscovering the 'we': There is a great desire for connectedness, in everyday life and in the workplace. A fresh look at the experiences of the last 10 years shows how companies can help to overcome divides and even polarisation.

Cologne, May 2025 - At a time when social division and individual isolation are on the rise, European Diversity | Engineering D&I is launching a new series of analyses. The aim is to show ways in which a new perspective on diversity can create a genuine 'we experience' for everyone.

The workplace as a starting point

Companies play a key role as they can initiate and cultivate diversity in an inclusive way through shared interests, including their own. Diversity pioneer Michael Stuber describes this as follows:

"At a time when society threatens to drift apart, constructively shaping diversity offers the opportunity to build new bridges. Our analyses show how companies can contribute to social cohesion - and how everyone, including the companies themselves, can benefit."

Recent studies highlight the urgency of taking action: according to a survey conducted by the Identity Foundation in April 2025, 87% of respondents perceive a growing separation and isolation in society that worries them. A full 89% agree that our society is divided and that a shared 'sense of unity' has been lost. These figures are also reflected in the world of work, where employees are increasingly looking for a sense of belonging and purpose.

Experience & evidence inform: Diversity is a unifying element

The new analysis series 'Diversity unites business and prosperity' from European Diversity starts right here. Based on over 20 years of experience and the latest research findings, it shows how a new understanding of the diversity approach can have a positive effect for everyone involved.

Among other things, the upcoming articles will shed light on

* What we can learn from the current resistance to 'DEI'

Stuber summarises what prompted European Diversity to create the series: "As diversity thought-leaders, we always paid attention to relevance and fit - in Europe and for all groups". According him, many initiatives in recent years have had toxic side effects that need to be addressed and "current world events are calling on Europe to move forward with new approaches."
