100 Years, 1 Roll at a Time: The Halper Family's Legacy of Supplying NYC, From Newark Market Street to Miami

07-11-2025 09:35 AM CET | Food & Beverage

Press release from: I. Halper Paper and Supplies Inc.

Bayonne, NJ - 06/26/2025 - Long before toilet paper became a hot commodity, the Halper family was already in love with it. And not just TP - but napkins, bags, bleach, cups, and everything that makes a restaurant run behind the scenes.
I. Halper Paper & Supplies, one of New York's oldest and most respected supply companies, is celebrating more than 100 years of family ownership and service to the restaurant and hospitality industry - and they're not slowing down. What began in 1910 with Great-Grandpa Max Halper, selling paper bags door-to-door on Market Street in Newark, New Jersey, is now a fourth-generation success story with deep ties to NYC's iconic food institutions - and a growing presence in Miami.

In 1993, Irwin Halper founded his own business under the name I. Halper Paper & Supplies. Just one year later, in 1994, his son Matthew Halper joined to help his father - marking the beginning of the fourth generation of Halpers in the paper business. In 2010, Irwin, Matthew, and Andrew celebrated 100 years of the Halper family's involvement in the industry.

Today, the business is proudly led by brothers Matthew Halper (CEO) and Andrew Halper, who carry forward the legacy of their grandfather Ben Halper, a WWII veteran and business partner in Halper Brothers, and their late father Irwin Halper, a beloved industry figure and the "I" in I. Halper Paper.

"We grew up surrounded by boxes of toilet paper and handwritten delivery logs," jokes Matthew. "Some kids played with toy trucks - we played with mop buckets. And we loved every minute of it."

While competitors scaled into faceless conglomerates, I. Halper stayed true to its roots - personal relationships, fair pricing, and "service as it should be," a motto coined by Irwin in 1993 and still central to the company's philosophy.

Over the decades, I. Halper has supplied the back-of-house essentials for generations of New York's legacy restaurants, and bakeries, quietly supporting the city's food scene through every trend and era. Today, Matthew and Andrew remain hands-on in business, working with the same dedication their great-grandfather had over a century ago.

Their recent expansion into Miami is fueled by the same values: real service, family culture, and a deep respect for the people who keep kitchens running.

"This isn't just a business - it's our family story," says Andrew. "We're proud to still be doing it our way, with customers we truly care about."

With a warehouse full of the basics - and a legacy that's anything but - the Halpers are proof that you can build an empire on paper towels, passion, and a whole lot of trust.
