Water Vapor Barrier Property Test Method of PET Bottles for Alcoholic Drinks

Usually the packaging materials used for alcoholic drinks (wine, liquor, etc.) should have sufficient barrier properties. Otherwise, the fragrance and taste of the alcoholic drinks may be compromised due to the change of concentration.
With the development of alcoholic drinks industry and packaging industry, PET bottles are introduced to the market. PET bottles are widely used to pack cosmetics, medical and healthy products, beverage and engine oil, etc. They are required to have much better barrier properties when they are used to pack alcoholic drinks. To be specific, take water vapor barrier property as an example, if the water vapor barrier property of PET bottle is insufficient, the taste of the alcoholic drinks may become unpleasant. Therefore, it is necessary for the manufacturers of alcoholic drinks to test the water vapor barrier property of PET bottles before use.
This article provides a test method of water vapor barrier property of PET bottles for your reference, which may be helpful to those manufacturers of alcoholic drinks in monitoring the packaging quality. We used Labthink’s W3/230 Water Vapor Transmission Rate Test System as the testing instrument.
Currently there are mainly two categories of test methods for water vapor transmission rate i.e. gravimetric method (also known as cup method and divided into dry cup method and wet cup method) and sensor method (including electrolytic sensor method, infrared sensor method and humidity sensor method). Labthink’s W3/230 Water Vapor Transmission Rate Test System adopts infrared sensor method.
The tests can be performed according to the following testing procedures.
Apply some adhesives on the bottle mouth and then fix the bottle on the sample support which is specialized for package test. Then connect the prepared bottle to the instrument with pipes and use a sealing bag to cover the bottle tightly.
Set specimen name, test temperature and test humidity, etc.
Adjust the pressure of nitrogen and make the humidity inside the test chamber reach preset value. Adjust the nitrogen flow rate in upper and lower chambers to standard values by turning the adjusting knob for flow rate.
Click Start Test to start the test. The system will record the water content change in the lower moisture side and calculate the final test results.
