Biopark Terneuzen A Smart Link to a Sustainable Future

Biopark Terneuzen, established in The Netherlands in February 2007 in the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal Zone, is a ‘Smart Link’ initiative that represents new thinking in the creation of long-term agro-industrial sustainability. Building on the already proven economic and knowledge transfer advantages obtained through the co-siting of associated businesses, Biopark Terneuzen raises the platform to a higher level.

Smart linking
Based on smart linking, the Biopark initiative promotes the exploitation of key synergies between its partner companies. Especially the potential to exchange and use each other’s by-products and waste streams as feedstock or energy for their own processes. These residual values would otherwise go unrecovered and unused. Biopark Smart Links thus cut storage and disposal costs, optimize production costs, improve profitability and reduce environmental burden.

Yara
The world’s biggest supplier of mineral fertilizer, Yara supplies waste heat and clean, post-process CO2 to a local horticultural greenhouse complex. www.yara.com

A leading producer of bio-ethanol from agricultural products, Nedalco is building an ultra-modern plant for the production of bio-ethanol. This is located on the Cargill site at Sas van Gent, close to its existing plant for the production of alcohol for the beverage industry. www.nedalco.com

Cargill
International provider of food, agricultural and risk management products and services. On its Sas van Gent site, Cargill provides Nedalco with residual starch and purified water, as well as power and compressed air for the production of alcohol. www.cargill.com

Heros
A recycler of waste and residual products, Heros will scale up its existing wastewater purification plant at Sluiskil in order to supply purified water streams to local greenhouse horticultural projects. www.heros.nl

Rosendaal Energy
Rosendaal Energy, a producer of sustainable, biodegradable diesel for the European market, delivers water to Heros. Rosendaal Energy is planning the construction of a biofuel additives plant on the Heros site. Capacity of the new plant is expected to be 250,000 tons per year and will use natural oils and fats, some feedstock originating from rapeseed grown locally in Zeeland. www.rosendaal-energy.nl
