The 2008 ISWC Speed Windsurfing World Championships: Day 6
Another two days of speed sailing have been completed today in epic conditions. Antoine Albeau (FRA, Starboard) and Karin Jaggi (SUI, F2, North) are now leading the overall ranking after six rounds and one discard. The day started already windy, and all sailors were aware of what would follow. The first start was scheduled for 11:00 then, and the 63 competitors were off on the water.
This time it was Patrick Diethelms (ITA, F2, North) turn, winning the first leg ahead of Dunkerbeck (T1/Proof, North) and Antoine Albeau. Chris Lockwood (AUS, Carbon Art, KA Sails) in fourth, finally his equipment was tuned for the conditions. With quite a big swell speedsailing in Fuerteventura is different to the flat water of Sandy Point, where Chris is regulary setting world class speeds. Another surprise in fifth, Dan Ellis from Great Britain scored his best result so far.
In the second leg then, the revenge of Antoine, with 40.54 the top speed of the competition so far. Diethelm in second this time, and Finian Maynard (BVI) finding his way back to the top with a third place. Dunkerbeck in fourth, and all three Moussilmani brothers in fifth to seventh place.
The womens competition was dominated by Karin Jaggi today, with a top speed of 35.53 knots she would have ranked 17th in the mens competition... Valerie Ghibaudo (FRA, Loft Sails) was not fully powered up today, only two second places for the lady.
The overall ranking is still lead by Antoine Albeau, with a perfect score of 3.5 points. Patrik Deathelm then clear behind, chased by Bjorn Dunkerbeck. Finian Maynard and Cyril Moussilmani (FRA, Fanatic, North Sails) already clear behind.
In the womens fleet a clear picture now as well, with Karin ahead of Valerie, Marion Raisi (FRA) and Emanuelle Duby (FRA) fighting for the place on the podium.
The forecast for tomorrow looks even better than today, and with the second discard after seven races then the ranking can be still mixed up. With another two days to go and a good forecast it will be a close battle for the world championship titled until the last race.

Speed:World:Cup is the officially sanctioned world tour of the International Speed Windsurfing Class (ISWC) and the Professional Kite Riders Association (PKRA).
The Speed:World:Cup events go from exceptional action in Namibia to more cosmopolitan spots such as Fuerteventura - the historical European Speedsurfing Capital, to huge shows of extreme conditions on small islands like Karpathos. In total, there are 200 to 300 competitors at the same time, from places like Australia or Brasil, to Germany or Norway.
The Tour has to offer: dynamic, thrilling action, and bring the most visually dynamic aquatic sports to the audience, making it a perfect vehicle to locate sponsors logos; a sport that is set outdoors, healthy and environmental friendly.
Superb action on the water, combined with an interactive and exciting life experience, that creates an atmosphere where the fans and the media are face to face with the most radical and intense competition and the biggest personalities of the sport.
Besides being a sport of radical action, Windsurfing and Kiteboarding is a way of life. This type of life is formed by several elements to which many aspire, but that few can really achieve. Most of, if not even all of these aspects of the sport are represented in the Speed:World:Cup.
The Speed:World:Cup is entitled to hold World, Continental and National Championships and is always looking for partners, local organizers as well as national associations, to propagate this exciting and thrilling discipline all over the world.
