Direct costs in a workers' compensation program are easy to identify: disability compensation, physical therapy, insurance premiums, etc. Indirect costs can be four-to-seven times more costly than direct (ASSE, OSHA), but are difficult to identify and quantify: loss of morale, productivity, efficiency, quality, overtime costs, etc. Administering claims onsite can help an entity control costs -- both direct and indirect -- by allowing risk management staff the flexibility to respond to direct and indirect costs more quickly.
