Yacht Design | Free Hull Resistance Calculation program released

A free hull resistance calculation program is made available for public download. This software allows a deeper insight into how different hull shapes influence hull resistance. Also, HullDrag/32 includes some options to optimize a sailing yacht's hull geometry, based on a target mission profile.

Buedelsdorf, Germany - December 8th, 2005 - Yacht Design | Free Hull Resistance Calculation program released

HullDrag/32 is a sailing yacht hull drag calculation utility that estimates the drag of a sailing yacht's hull, keel and rudder. In addition, it offers optimization of Cp and LCB for relative speeds of up to Fn=0.75.

Said Hans Zwakenberg, the author of HullDrag/32: "This software is an educational tool if nothing else. It's easy to see how hull resistance changes when tweaking the hull geometry. Also, the resistance increasing effect of a hull heeling under wind pressure can be studied."

HullDrag/32 differentiates between six different resistance components that make up the total hull resistance. Some of the features of HullDrag/32, which may be downloaded from http://www.zwakenberg.de/hulldrag/ are:
- Resistance estimates of hull, keel and rudder
- Optimization of Cp (prismatic) and LCB (longitudinal center of buoyancy) for speeds up to Fn=0.45
- resistance estimates for speeds up to Fn=0.75

- estimates frictional resistance for hull, keel and rudder, surface roughness resistance
- easy to use ASCII hull description input files
- easy to use ASCII (comma separated) output files
- command line & batch operation

Professional yacht designers use HullDrag/32 too; one undisclosed designer used HullDrag/32 for preliminary design decision support for two of his designs: a Mini-650 Minitransat yacht and a Mount-Gay MG-30 design.
