Ein Gateway ist einfach ausgedrückt eine physische Konvertierungsmaschine. Konvertiert wird herkömmliche telefonische Kommunikation (im Fachjargon: TDM TelefonTraffic = Time Division Multiplexing Traffic) in IP-Pakete (IP steht für Internet Protocol – also „internetfähige Pakete“) zur Übermittlung über ein Datennetzwerk bzw. vice versa digitale IP-Pakete in TDM Kommunikation für den Transport zu einem PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network).
Wenn Sie etwa ein nicht IP-fähiges Telefonsystem oder Netzwerk verwenden, kann Ihnen also ein VoIP-Gateway (manche sprechen auf von einem PSTN-Gateway) dabei helfen, die Lücke zwischen traditionellen und neuen digitalen Geräten zu schließen und Sie und Ihre Benutzer mit der digitalen Welt verbinden.

- Eingehende PSTN Telefonleitungen (analog oder digital) zu VoIP/SIP übertragen
