Definition
The phenomenon known as shrinkage occurs when textiles undergo specific procedures such as washing, dehydration, drying, and others that alter its length or breadth. The proportion of cloth shrinkage following washing or soaking in water is referred to as fabric shrinkage.
Synthetic fibers and mixed textiles shrink at the lowest rate, with woolen, linen, and cotton fabrics falling in between. Silk fabrics shrink more than other textiles; viscose fiber, synthetic cotton, and synthetic wool fabrics shrink most.

Fabric shrinkage test process (depends on ISO 5077)

1. Principle
The specimens go through the proper washing and drying processes after being conditioned and sized in a predetermined standard environment. Rehumidify after the drying process, then measure the dimensions once again to determine the changes in dimensions.
2. Equipment and reagents

4. Sample
Cut samples for sampling. Every sample need to measure a minimum of 500 mm by 500 mm. Every side need to go parallel to the cloth's length and width. Following mutual agreement, full-width samples may be utilized for testing if the fabric width is less than 650 mm.
Controlled humidity: leave the sample in a room with controlled humidity for four hours or longer, or until the weight remains steady. Note: It is said that constant weight has been reached when the weight is measured at one-hour intervals and the mass changes by no more than 0.25%.

Measurement technique: To prevent the sample from being distorted, place it flat on a level measurement platform and gently smooth out any creases. To measure the distance between the two designated spots, place the measuring tape on the sample and note the result to the closest 1 mm.
5. Procedure
Determine the sample's original length and breadth after conditioning and measuring it.
Using one of the methods outlined in ISO 6330, wash and dry the specimen.
Following the steps outlined in ISO 3759, measure the sample's size and compute its dimensional change rate. Then, adjust the sample's humidity.

6. Expression of results
Use the following formula to get the size change percentage:
(Xt-X0) / X0*100%
The formula's initial size, expressed in millimeters, is denoted by X0.

Xt represents the processed size in millimeters.
Separately note the proportion of dimensional change. To show elongation, use the "+" symbol; to show contraction, use the "-" sign.
7. Experiment report
The following ought to be included in the test report:
a) Describe how the specimen was prepared, marked, and measured in compliance with this standard, and include a description of any extra measurement items that were produced; b) Describe the processes used for washing, drying, pressing, and other finishing techniques;

d) For fabric samples, provide the average dimensional change rate in the width direction (weft direction or transverse direction) and the average dimensional change rate in the length direction (warp or longitudinal direction). c) The number of specimens.
