Inspiring Good News Globally to Save Lives and Give Hope
Today marks Good News Day (August 8), a worldwide initiative encouraging people to flood social media, online platforms and mainstream news with uplifting stories - a simple act that could save lives.Founded in 2018 by Media Queen Aldwyn Altuney after losing her fourth friend to suicide by the age of 45, Good News Day was created to inspire people to focus on the positives in life and counter the constant barrage of negative headlines.
Since the onset of COVID-19, global suicide rates have reportedly quadrupled.
Traditionally, around one million people take their own lives each year, but that number has surged, and Ms Altuney believes the media plays a huge role.
"The messages we consume every day impact how we feel," Ms Altuney said.
"When all we hear is bad news, it's easy to lose hope. Good News Day is about tipping the balance and inspiring people to love their lives again."
Building on the success of Good News Day, she launched the Global Good News Challenge in June 2020 - a free monthly social media video challenge where participants share gratitude and positive stories live online.
The challenge can start on any day of the month and runs for as many days as the month's number - for example, eight days in August.
The concept is simple: share good news, acts of kindness and personal wins to spark a ripple effect of positivity around the world.
Good News Day reminds people to:
Share positivity - Spread stories of hope, kindness and inspiration.
Inspire others - Encourage more people to share uplifting content.
Focus on the good - Look for the positives even in challenging times.
Connect through kindness - Build community through sharing good news.
"Gandhi said, 'Be the change you wish to see in the world'," Ms Altuney said.
"If we want a happier, more connected world, it starts with each of us putting out messages of hope."
